MAGIC Privacy Statement

Privacy Policy and Special Rules Regarding Children

The Children's Online Privacy Protection Act ("COPPA") requires that we inform parents and legal guardians about how we collect, use, and disclose personal information from children under 13 years of age. The MAGIC Project is not directed at children under 13 years of age, but we recognize that with proper adult supervision, some parents might permit their children to visit the MAGIC Project and use our service. COPPA requires that we obtain the consent of parents and guardians in order for children under 13 years of age to use our website.

The MAGIC Project has created this privacy policy to clearly outline for the site's users what types of information will be collected through use of this site and for what purposes the information will be used. This statement discloses the information gathering practices for the MAGIC Project.

Security and Confidentiality

No data transmissions over the internet or via wireless networks can be guaranteed to be 100% secure. Consequently, we cannot ensure or warrant the security of any information you transmit to us, and you do so at your own risk. Once we receive your transmission, we make efforts to ensure security on our systems.

The MAGIC Project does not keep permanent records on its website. When a potential mentee applies online, an automated email is sent to her email address. She then confirms her request by clicking on a URL provided in the automatic email. After she clicks on the URL, registration is complete, and an email is sent to a MAGIC Project officer, who then deletes the mentee information from the website backend, and the only existing record of the mentee's information is the email and a printed hardcopy that is kept in a notebook in a secure location.

Spam

The MAGIC Project is the sole owner of the information collected through this site. The MAGIC Project will not sell, rent, or share any information gathered through this site for commercial purposes.

Information Collected

No area of our site is directed at children under 13 years of age, but our site asks for age-identifying information from our visitors.

We respect the privacy of children, and do not collect any more personal information than reasonably necessary to enable them to participate in the MAGIC Project.

We collect the following types of personal information directly from children online:

  1. E-mail address
This website requires potential mentees and mentors to provide an email address so that staff from the MAGIC Project may communicate in a secure manner. For potential mentees, this email address will be used to solicit parental permission for use of the website and communication with a mentor. Email addresses are kept strictly confidential.
  2. First and last name
If a student is interested in becoming a mentee through the MAGIC Project, we ask for their first and last name in order to communicate with them via email and later by phone. Names are kept strictly confidential.
  3. Home address and telephone number
This information is collected exclusively for obtaining parental consent for the student to participate in the MAGIC Project. At the request of the parent, this information will be removed from our database after parental consent is obtained.

We collect the following types of information from children online and associate that information with one or more of the above identifiers:

  1. Information about the student's parents
This information is obtained exclusively for securing parental consent for the student to participate in the MAGIC Project. At the request of the parent, this information will be removed from our database after parental consent is obtained.
  2. Academic interests
The goal of the MAGIC Project is to match a mentee with a mentor in an area of STEM that the mentee finds the most interesting as a future career. Therefore, we collect information about what areas of STEM a prospective mentee would like to learn more about.

Third Party Access to Personal Information

We do not have any agreements with outside organizations to share personal information collected at getmagic.org.

Deletion of Account

Any user who wishes to cease participation in the MAGIC Project may contact us using this link. Upon receiving such notice, the MAGIC Project will delete the user's information from its database.

Information Collected by Our Server

All servers on the internet, including the one that hosts getmagic.org, receive information about the computers used to visit websites. Specifically, the server logs the visitor's IP address, identification, authentication, time stamp (when a file was accessed), HTTP request, status code (whether the file was transferred correctly), referrer (the page from which the visitor clicked), and the name and version of the visitor's web browser. No personal information is used in this process, and cookies (files containing user information that a website transfers to the visitor's computer) are not used on this site.

Use and Sharing of Information

The information we collect from children is used initially to match the prospective mentee with a mentor in a corresponding field of STEM. Thereafter, it is used for record keeping and for communicating with mentors and mentees participating in the MAGIC Project.

Parental Consent

The information we collect from children is used initially to match the prospective mentee with a mentor in a corresponding field of computer science. Thereafter, it is used for record keeping and for communicating with mentors and mentees participating in the MAGIC Project.

The MAGIC Project requires parental consent for a prospective mentee to participate in the mentoring program. Accordingly, we require the parent to:

  1. Review this privacy policy.
  2. Verify that the child's parent or guardian knows about and authorizes our information practices related to children protected by COPPA.
  3. Verify through the use of an E-mail confirmation and second authorization that the parent or guardian consents to the Terms of Service and this Privacy Policy.

Without verified parental notice and consent, we will not knowingly collect personal information relating to children under 13 years of age, and if we learn that we have inadvertently collected such information, we will promptly delete it.

Parental consent will be obtained by the parent signing a consent form and faxing or mailing it to the MAGIC Project. If the mentee applies for a mentor through her school with her parent present, she can submit her form in person.

Parental Review

In compliance with COPPA, a parent or legal guardian may request from us to review, delete or stop the collection of personally identifiable information relating to their child or any child in their legal custody who is under 13 years of age. Parents can review the information that we have collected from their children online, prevent the further use or maintenance of such information, or direct the deletion of their children's personal information by:

  • calling us at the telephone number provided below;
  • e-mailing us at this link;
  • writing to us at the address provided below.
